Here's the Initial Auction info again in case you missed it in the other thread. Please ask away on any questions at all!
2019 Initial MLB Auction
The initial auction for MLB players will take place on ProBoards, just as our normal Free Agency would. The initial auction will follow the same rules as our standard off-season Free Agency as well, except for the Winning Bid Timelength.
Otherwise, we will hold the initial auction as soon as we are filled & paid, wrapping up by Opening Day. The bidding rules are below, along with the initial schedule.
Schedule:
Group One: Top 25 Hitters & Top 25 Pitchers
Group Two: Top 26-50 Hitters & Top 26-50 Pitchers
Group Three: Top 51-100 Hitters & Top 51-75 Pitchers
Group Four: Top 101-150 Hitters & Top 76-100 Pitchers
Group Five: Top 151-200 Hitters & Top 101-125 Pitchers
Group Six: Outfielders/Catchers/DH (OF/C/DH)
Group Seven: Infielders (1B, 2B, SS, 3B)
Group Eight: Relief Pitchers
Group Nine: Any Available Remaining FA's (above MLB rookie threshold)
Groups One thru Five will be the only pre-populated/general groups within the MLB auction. After these groups, the commissioner will no longer be pre-populating the auction board with the players and teams are now required to nominate the players they wish to bid on by starting a new thread.
As commonplace with this league, please get used to listing players in the following format:
Last Name, First Name POS TM
All bidding rules are in the Constitution, in short - 10 hour winning bid time (no overnight timer), minimum bid of $0.30M, bidding is total contract amount, contract length requirements are below, minimum increase is $0.25M.
The minimum contract length is 1 year, the maximum is 5 years. Players signed for $5M or more must be signed to a minimum 2-year contract with no options available until after the 1st year. Players signed for $10M or more must be signed to a minimum 3-year contract with no options available until after the 2nd year. Players signed for $15M or more must be signed to a minimum 4-year contract with no option available until after the 3rd year. Players signed for $20M (max bid) must be signed to a minimum 5-year contract with no option available until after the 4th year.
During the initial auction, in the case of matching max bids, the team offering the longest amount of years wins the player (contract length will be sent as a private message to the LM) in which the option year does not count, therefore a 5-year max contract is the maximum at $20.00M/year. In the case of an option (for example, a 4-year contract without an option wins over a 4-year contract with an option). In the case that both teams offer the same contract length for the player, the team with the lower draft pick in the Initial Prospect Auction will automatically win the player as the player’s “decision”
The first few groups are to ease each owner into the auction & bidding process (smaller groups of players). Groups four thru seven will be larger groups with more nominated players. The Google Spreadsheet has a tab "2019 MLB Auction" that lists each current nominated player & their high bid. I will update this in real-time during the auction. Some quick notes: as you'll see on the Spreadsheet, the average salary per player for your team is $2.88M. Therefore, the minimum (35 slots) are already populated with the league minimum salary ($0.30M). This is to ensure you do not overbid early and can fill your minimum roster requirements. The $115M salary cap immediately decreases to $104M once this is taken into consideration, so please keep this in mind and be aware of over-spending during the initial auction. This is another reason the groups are split up as they are, but if over-spending is occurring, groups four-seven may be eliminated and we'll continue following the rankings.
While the commissioner will do everything in his power to keep the Auction tab up-to-date in real-time, each owner is responsible for their own bids & actions as the league cannot monitor the sheet 24/7.
Therefore, it is in the best interest of the league if we can finalize all participants & settings, answer any remaining questions, run a sample player auction, and get our MLB draft up & running as soon as possible. Do not forget, we still have a 200-man MiLB draft that needs to occur. In this draft, players receive Rookie (RK) contracts and the building of your franchise thru Rookie Contracts is essential to the success of this league.
Bidding Process:
Bidding will be held on ProBoards. The Commissioners will post the nominated players for Week One, but in the weeks after, a new thread can be created by an owner to nominate a player they wish to bid upon (so long as it fits the above auction schedule). A bid will be the total amount of money in the contract you are offering (anywhere from $0.30M to $20M) and the Commissioner will keep a live/working Google Spreadsheet with nominated players, current price & when their bids expire (along with this information being available on the ProBoards bidding thread).
Bidding will start at a minimum salary of $0.30M. The minimum bid increase is $0.10M if the bid is <$1.00M. If the current bid is ≥ $1.00M, the minimum bid increase is $0.25M. If the next legal bid requires an increase in contract length (see Rule 7.7.1) or if the maximum salary ($20M) is reached the bid may be matched. There are no maximum bid increases.
During the initial auction, in the case of matching bids, the team offering the longest amount of years wins the player (contract length will be sent as a private message to the LM). In the case that both teams offer the same contract length for the player, you will then (in this initial auction only) be allowed to spend your salary cap as a signing bonus (again, sent in a private message to the LM) and whichever team offers the highest amount will win the player. In the extremely rare case even this is a tie, then an online random generator will be used 5 times and the majority outcome will then win that player.
20 hours after the last bid, the high bidder will be declared the winner. The maximum bid/salary a player may receive is $20M. Bids that take a team over the salary cap will be considered void. Teams can bid on players if over the 40 man roster limit but must make moves as soon as possible to comply with limit.
Note: All active bids are included in the salary cap limit, even if the player has not been won yet. An owner is not allowed to overcommit salary. Additionally, any roster spots below 35 men will be counted at the minimum salary ($.30M), so that an owner must have available salary cap space to fill those spots, too.
Contract lengths:
The minimum contract length is 1 year, the maximum is 5 years.
Players signed for $5M or more must be signed to a minimum 2-year contract with no options available until after the 1st year.
Players signed for $10M or more must be signed to a minimum 3-year contract with no options available until after the 2nd year.
Players signed for $15M or more must be signed to a minimum 4-year contract with no option available until after the 3rd year.
Players signed for $20M (max bid) must be signed to a minimum 5-year contract with no option available until after the 4th year.
Examples:
1) Giancarlo Stanton (OF) NYY is won for the max bid of $20.00M.
The winning team has two options for his contract:
- $20m/yr for 5 years
- $20m/yr for 5 years, option after the 4th season. If declined, player becomes a free agent. If accepted, see extension section below (can be extended for 1, 2 or 3 years.)
2) Antonio Senzetala (SP) COL is won with a bid of $8.00M.
The winning team has many contract length options, but the only requirement is a 2-year minimum.
- $8m/yr for 2 years
- $8m/yr for 2 years, option after the 1st season. If declined, player becomes a free agent. If accepted, see extension section below (can be extended for 1, 2 or 3 years.)
- $8m/yr for anywhere between 2-5 years; the max length for a contract is 5 years and you may sign any player to this length so long as your current salary cap permits.
Thank you, everyone!
